About Hydrotherapy
Swimming
All animals can swim by instinct, however some dogs have a more natural
tendency towards swimming than others and some may take more time
to introduce to the water. How much they enjoy it can be increased
by kind and motivational handling.
Hydrotherapy provides non weight bearing
exercise, which in turn minimises pressure on damaged/painful joints and
muscles. Swimming is hard work and provides a cardiovascular workout, a
five minute swim for a dog is the equivalent to a five mile run.
Hydrotherapy has proven to be beneficial in the treatment of many conditions, including the following:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis, sprains, fractures & breaks.
- Cruciate ligament problems, OCD, CDRM.
- Pre and post operative muscle regeneration and maintenance.
- Muscle, ligament and tendon damage.
- Obesity & general fitness.
In the interests of safety, every dog will require veterinary consent prior to commencing hydrotherapy.
